Japanese Business People Visit Cahora Bassa

A delegation consisting of about 45 Japanese business people from various sectors of the Japanese economy visited the Cahora Bassa hydro-electric dam on 29 January, with the purposes of understanding the current stage of operation of the company and possible business opportunities. The delegation was accompanied by the Mozambican Ambassador to Japan, Belmiro Malate, and his counterpart in Mozambique, Susuma Segawa, and other members of the Japanese government. This visit to Cahora Bassa was part of a business trip to Mozambique between 28 January and 1 February.

During the meeting held to present a general picture of the operations of HCB, the Japanese business people expressed an interest in obtaining information about the project to build a second Cahora Bassa power station on the north bank of the river. In response to the request for clarification from the visitors, the Chairperson of the HCB Board of Directors, Dr. Paulo Muxanga, gave explanatory information about the progress of the project, mentioning that new geophysical studies are being undertaken, and that the financial investment was coming from the Mozambican state.

The Japanese delegation later visited various other economic undertakings in other Mozambican provinces.
