As part of the company’s social responsibility policy, about 40 lamps for public lighting, using a system of solar panels as their source of energy, have been set up in villages located on the road between Songo and Matambo.
HCB, in coordination with community leaders, identified the points for installing the lamps (health centres, schools, meeting places, administrative posts and others).
At the same time, work was done to make the public aware of the precautions that should be taken to ensure that the new lighting systems last as long as possible.
It is important to stress that in these areas there is no electricity grid. It is over these areas that the HCB HVDC transmission lines pass, carrying electricity to South Africa.
Thus installing these systems not only helps the public, but also ensures that they become aware of the care that should be taken with the power lines.
USEFUL INFORMATION
· Life span of the Solar Panel – 20 years.
· Life span of the batteries – 4 to 5 years.
· The batteries switch off, if there is a risk of a total loss of charge.
· Life span of the lamps – 12,000 hours (4 to 5 years)
The batteries can power the lamps for 12 hours per night on 5 consecutive days, without needing to be recharged.
