ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

HCB’s approach to environmental management has been encapsulated in the company’s Environmental Management System document, established and approved by the board of directors in 2008. The policy guides all environmental operations across all business units, with a view to integrate initiatives at all organisational levels.

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING

Access to clean, fresh water for the communities surrounding HCB’s operations is fundamental to the company’s ongoing environmental strategy. As such, HCB has strict monitoring procedures to ensure for the highest standard of water quality in order to preserve the sustainability of aquatic and eco systems, as well as the retention of energy production infrastructure.

The monitoring of the Cahora Bassa reservoir, follows principles set out in the NEB (Norms for Operating Dams) and takes into account recommendations from SADC, the ICOLD (International Commission on Large Dams) and various specialised UN agencies. Here, environmental and ecological conditions surrounding the reservoir are continually assessed.
