HCB AND SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
HCB is committed to driving ongoing development within Mozambique through sustainable environmental management across all of its operations. This is achieved through global best practice based on the following principles:

Access to clean, fresh water for the communities surrounding HCB’s operations is fundamental to the company’s ongoing environmental strategy. As such, HCB has strict monitoring procedures to ensure for the highest standard of water quality in order to preserve the sustainability of aquatic and eco systems, as well as the retention of energy production infrastructure.
The monitoring of the Cahora Bassa reservoir, follows principles set out in the NEB (Norms for Operating Dams) and takes into account recommendations from SADC, the ICOLD (International Commission on Large Dams) and various specialised UN agencies. Here, environmental and ecological conditions surrounding the reservoir are continually assessed.

Diagnosing pollutant discharges and ascertaining water quality
Monitoring the evolution of ecosystem performance and implementing early warning systems
Evaluating sediment evolution (Albufeira)
